11-year-old dies by suicide after ICE threats from bullies

An 11-year-old girl from Gainesville, Texas, Jocelynn Rojo Carranza, died by suicide on February 8 after reportedly enduring relentless bullying over her family’s immigration status. Her mother, Marbella Carranza, says classmates threatened her daughter, claiming immigration would take her parents away. Jocelynn had sought help through school counseling, but her family was never informed.

Gainesville Independent School District responded by stating all bullying reports are taken seriously but cited privacy laws for withholding details. Jocelynn’s mother is demanding justice, accusing the school of negligence.

Jocelynn was remembered as a joyful girl who loved dancing, movie nights, and time with family. Her funeral was held on February 14, with music and memories shared by loved ones.

Her tragic death has left the community in mourning and sparked urgent calls for better bullying prevention and communication in schools. Her story highlights the devastating impact bullying can have—and the need for immediate change.
